A bit about our history!!

The group originally registered as 24th Purley (Chaldon) in 1930 re-registered under the name 1st Chaldon in 1933 when the new district of Caterham was formed.

After a brief closure from the late 1930's the group re-formed and registered as Chaldon scout group in 1948

Chaldon Scout Group was founded in 1948 with the forming of a cub pack in February of that year. By September a Scout troop had opened and the Group has thrived in Chaldon ever since.

Meetings were held in the old village hall, Chaldon, until 1950 when the group moved to a small hut located in Colonel Gibson’s field (the rear of what is now the village hall car park, Rook Lane).

Despite its small size, lack of running water and a temperamental heater this hut remained our home for ten years before being replaced with a slightly larger building on the same site.

Eventually the Group found it necessary to seek another home and obtained a lease in 1969 from the National Trust for its current site on Six Brothers Field off Willey Broom Lane. Our headquarters building, purchased from Caterham Barracks with generous local assistance, was erected on the new site in 1970 and the Group moved in shortly afterwards.
